Martin Lipton, Law '55, Chair Emeritus of the NYU Board of Trustees

New York University School of Law

Martin Lipton (Law ’55) was interviewed by Evan R. Chesler (Arts ’70, Law ’75) on September 29, 2025, at the offices of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in Manhattan. The conversation covers Lipton's early days at NYU starting in 1952, his experiences as a Root-Tilden Scholar, his tenure on the Law Review, and his interactions with Deans Arthur Vanderbilt and Russell Niles. It also covers his dual career as a practitioner and NYU securities law professor. Lipton is widely known for inventing the "poison pill" takeover defense and for his decades of leadership at NYU, where he served as a trustee and chair of the NYU University Board.
