Abstract
The article discusses the affirmative action programs in the workplace in the U.S. with reference to Grutter v. Bollinger case. Affirmative action, including preferential consideration of women and people of color, undoubtedly plays some role in the hiring and promotional decisions that go into creating the diverse workforces. Affirmative action in employment and in higher education currently reaches only those who are at least "qualified" by conventional criteria, and those qualifications are virtually unattainable to many African-Americans who are caught in the deepest cycles of racial isolation and socioeconomic deprivation.
