Abstract
I have come to see an important connection between my experience of walking the streets with my baby and the experiences of my indigent clients whose parenting is regularly attacked. I want to tread carefully here: I am a privileged, financially well-off, white woman with a professional degree; my clients are poor, usually minorities, and always socially disadvantaged. It would be obscene to treat our troubles as analogous. It would also be problematic, though, to ignore the relationship. Despite the significant differences, if the commonality of these experiences were recognized, we would all be better off. We would gain both from a sense of community and, over the long term, from the concrete benefits that strong, broad alliances can bring.
