Abstract
Catherine Gage O'Grady in Preparing Students for the Profession, 4 CLIN. L. REV. 485 (1998), appropriately underscores the importance of professional autonomy for the individual lawyer and "an individual attorney's power to make his or her own lawyering choices, among the broad spectrum of opportunities for choice, rather than having the choices made by someone else." Id. at 489. However, she dismisses the conception of a "unitary profession" as a "fiction" and rejects the idea that there is today any single shared vision of what it means to be a lawyer. She purports to join "a host of others" in rejecting the concept of a single profession. Id. at 488 n.8.
