Abstract
This article is about risk. The risk of destroying confidence in the very attempt of building it. The risk of allowing creative tension to dissolve into hostility. The risk of permitting clinic precepts of social justice, commitment and professionalism to deconstruct into alienation, intolerance and mediocre performance. Finally, this article is about the learning that takes place uncomfortably, yet inescapably, close to these lines. The article discusses these issues in the context of two videotaped vignettes that were created by Professor Jennifer Lyman and myself for the 1995 Association of American Law Schools Section on Clinical Legal Education Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri ("the AALS Meeting"). The scripts of the two vignettes follow, beginning with my script about a student named Lewis, and then with Professor Lyman's script about a student named Derrick. The article will also discuss my experience supervising Jennifer Howard and issues raised by her article, which is included in this issue of the Clinical Law Review.
